The 2017 Tour of Flanders will go down as one of the most action-packed and breath-taking editions of the Ronde in recent years.

The re-instatement of the Muur Van Geraardsbergen and the scintillating form of the world’s best one-day racers combined to produce a compelling and unpredictable race.

Photographer Léon van Bon was on hand to capture the Monument of cycling in all its glory.

Fans line the cobbles as bright spring sunshine descended on Belgium for the 101st edition of Flanders’ Finest.

One member of the next generation of Belgian cycling fans peers through the crowd for his heroes.

The Muur returned to the Ronde for the first time since 2011. Although the climb did not reprise its historic role as the penultimate test on the race, the cobbles helped forge a key move from which the winner would come.

This is my church. Fans congregate on the summit of the Kapelmuur and bask in the Belgian sunshine.

The Muur: Flanders’ most iconic climb.

Gilbert embarks on his 55km solo move…

…culminating in a remarkable solo victory on the line outside Oudenaarde.

Disappointment for the world champion Peter Sagan after a tangle with advertising hoardings and a spectator’s coat on the final ascent of the Oude Kwaremont sent him tumbling to the ground.

Until next year, Ronde Van Vlaanderen.
